There is a legend
about Rudram and Chamakam recitals from Vedic times. Daksha Prajapati had
several daughters and one was Dakshayani meaning daughter of Daksha and also
named Sati. She married the tribal god Rudra Shiva against her father’s wish.
She was made an outcaste by Daksha. At
one point Daksha decided to perform a great sacrifice and he invited all the
gods and seers to participate. However Rudra Shiva was not invited. Learning
about the conduct of great sacrifice, Sati asked Shiva to visit the sacrifice.
Shiva replied that we are not invited and therefore should not go. Sati however
insisted for going. She contended that there is no need for an invitation as
the place was her own father. Shiva cautioned her that she might be humiliated
at the venue by Daksha himself or by others. But Sati proceeded to her father’s
place. Shiva ordered his demigods to
accompany Sati. Sati was stopped at the entrance to the sacrifice chamber by
her father. He abused both Shiva and her for coming to the place uninvited. So humiliated
by her father Sati did not want to go back but burned herself at the entrance.
The demigods went back to Shiva and appraised of what happened at the
sacrificial place. Shiva rose with his fierce eyes and shaking with anger. He
strode over the place and damaged everything there. He was on his own dancing
the dance of death Shiva thandavam. He caught Daksha and plucked his head and
threw at far away. He continued his thandavam. The gods and seers present were
greatly concerned about the consequence Shiva thandavam praised and prayed to
him reciting Rudram. This Suktam is full of praise to Rudra Shiva in all forms
just like “Sarvam
Vishnumayam Jagat”. “Sarvam Shivamayam Jagat. This suktam gives
more prominence to those forms that are commonly seen in the rural environment.
Artisans, hunters, armies and all good
bad and indifferent beings. At the end Shiva calmed. The seers approached him
to think of saving the sacrifice to completion. It could not be completed in
the absence of the performer Daksha. So Daksha to be given life but no one
could locate the severed head of Daksha. Shiva told his men to bring a head of
the first sighted living being and place it on Dakshas body. They sighted a
goat and cut its head and fixed on Dakshas body. Thus Daksha came alive. The
sacrifice continued with recital of Chamakam. For every step the goat head
bleated me, me. So Camakam formed part of many rituals.
Rudram might be the
fore runner of the later day Bhakti cult mainly for the praising a deity with
hundreds and thousands of names. Two of the most famous of them all are (1)
Vishnu Sahasranamam and (2) Lalitasahasranama respectively. The devotees are so
moved by mass chanting of these names they even forget their daily duties at
times. the namavalies are full of
similar meaning name to all the deities making it sound true that all the gods and goddesses are one and
the same with different nomenclatures even after all these as true Rudram
sounds somewhat different from all others.
Among the Vedic; Rudras
are eleven and Shiva is one of them. Rudram takes both singular and plural
names in this Suktam. Rudra or Rudras are depicted in their ordinary forms
known in rural and forest areas. In fact Rudra depicted here is forest tribal
deity fierce looking and armed with all kind of weapons of a forest dweller.
This Suktam seems to
be prayers by Brahmins who wanted safe habitat near the periphery of the
forests which are under the care of chieftains termed Rudras. They rule those
forests both inside and its near surrounding areas and people inhabiting there.
The professionals, artisans, potters, brick workers etc. The details are in the
text. Curiously, the insiders include thieves, cheaters etc. The Brahmins
praise them all as aspects of Rudras and their manifestations. After showing
respect to all the Brahmins beg for safety. “use weapons against our enemie sand
dont harm my father, mother, spouses, children, cattle and horses. We will
perform great sacrifices in fire to bestow health, wealth and happiness to all
dwellers here.”All these prayers duly fit in legend also.
The Suktam addresses to the Rudra on his dance destruction. The next Suktam
Chamakam is chanted with goat head Daksha mewing, me, me; meaning to me or mine.
A look at the text.
Since the language is Vedic Sanskrit there are any numbers of words that miss
our full understanding. Here we trace only those that are familiar.
The first Anuvaka is of fifteen steps in poetic
prose. They enumerate several names but mainly of a fighter with arms. The
devotee keeps on praying that the arms are used only against enemies of gods
and or men. The last one is a long one thus: K.N.K.)

salutations to that glorious and great God.

This
form colored brass red is beneficial. Those Rudras seen around might be angry
but we praise them to be harmless.
Anuvaka 2 is somewhat earthly.

Bow to the
leader with golden hands, lord of four directions. Bow to the trees with green
tresses also to the lord of the cattle. The lord of pathways; of food; of all
worlds; all fields as well as the charioteer and protector of forests.
Salutations to the red One; to the Lord of trees, to the counselor of assemblies, the chief of
traders, to the Lord of dense impenetrable clumps and clusters of thickets, who
has created the world and to the Lord of all vegetation, to Him of the fearsome
war cry. To the leader of the hunters and those beings who run from there.
(Here it is a description of the hunting games in
the forest. The hunters make fearsome big noise in order to scare the game from
the hiding place. So the animals run helter skeletal in order to escape.

overpower them who can fight on all sides, who stands prominent, the wielder of
the sword; to the prince of thieves, who holds a dart in His hand to fit in His
bow, who has a quiver in His back; to the Lord of those who thieve openly, who
worming himself into the confidence of others and disillusions them
occasionally, and He who cheats them systematically; to Him pretending to be an
acquaintance takes away what belongs to them, who moves about guardedly ever
with intention to steal; to Him who moves amidst crowds and thronged places for
pick-pocketing; to the Lord of forest thieves, salutations, who is in the form
of those who protect themselves in armor, who want to kill others; to the Lord
of those who want to steal crops and wealth, salutations, who is in the form of
swordsmen who wander about at night; to the Lord of those who kill and seize
others’ possessions, who wears a turban, who wanders about the mountains; to
the leader of the landlords, salutations.
(On the face of it this portion seems to describe
the god as some kind of undesirables, like chief of thieves, the leader of
dacoits, cheats, silently spies on others, pickpockets, who wander at nights,
having headgears and climbing hills. KNK.)

Rudra,
the strong one with the matted locks, opposing whom his enemy warriors are defeated and meet
their doom.

we adopt a mental inclination which results in Rudra maintaining friendship
with our human relations and our wealth of cattle; sleek and content.

Rudra! Confer on us happiness in this world, and in the next.

like the lion, fierce for the purpose of destruction.
